Shane - wheel weights question Can't Post

My LE's chromed aluminum wheels have wheel weights on the outer lip of the wheel as is common practice, and I know a lot of tire experts claim that the weight should be split between the inner and outer wheel lips (weights on both sides of the wheel). However, I remember back when I used to install custom wheels many years ago, we would only attach the clip-on weights to the inside lip so they didn't show on the outside. Is there any problem with removing the weights from the outside lip and reinstalling them in the exact same position on the inside lip? Or should the wheels be rebalanced and the weights installed only on the inside lip?

I just hate those ugly weights on the outside of my nice chrome wheels! ;-(

Whenever we balance a non-steel wheel, we always use tape weights (stick on weights) on the inside of the wheel. The dealers normally use nylon coated clip on weights which do not hurt the wheel but are very unattractive. Taking them off the front of the wheel and putting them on the inside lip will not keep the wheel in balance and would need to be rebalanced.

I would highly recommend that you take it somewhere and have them remove the clip on weights and apply the tape weights, which will not appear on the outside of the wheel.

You have to be careful with clip on weights on the lip of the wheel, because if it is not nylon coated, it can damage the finish of the wheel and will be a headache for the remainder of the life of the wheel.

Thanks Shane! I think I'll live with them for now and have them use the stick-on weights when I get new tires. Appreciate your help!
