Stage 1 on Turbo Lite? Anyone actually done this? Can't Post

While shopping PT's recently I found two likely candidates (See my post in the General Forum). One was an 03 GT and the other an 04 Platinum (Limited) with Turbo Lite. In the process of making a decision, I called the parts dept. at my dealer and asked them whether the two versions shared common internal parts. Turns out that the crank is common to both, but apparently everything else is different.
My question is whether the 180 HP engine is beefed up to take the strain of higher output with Satge 1. Note that the parts guy did not say, nor am I implying, that one was better than the other. Only that they are not the same.
Opinions? Experiences?

I'm at that awkward age. I ask for the senior discount at restaurants, but my PT still has Stage 1 and dual 10" subwoofers.

As I understand it the engines are same. Only the PCM is different. When you add stage 1 to the GT or lite for any given year it will result in the same HP.

Any idea why the parts list would be different? He kept me on hold for several minutes while checking.
Sure hope this is an option.

The parts guy told you the GT and Turbo Lite engines were different? That's pretty stupid for a parts guy at a dealership. The engines are exactly the same. The pcms are programmed differently hence the Turbo Lite is only 180 hp and can use regular gas. There are differences between the two, but not enginewise.

Go for the 04 Platinum (Limited). The engines are the same... I have an 04 Lite which I added the Stage 1 PCM ; You can't go wrong. I would also suggest that you pick up the plastic manifold for the 05/06 as well... get rid of the aluminum manifold. As far as straining the engine, it will not hurt a thing by adding Stage 1... now if you start messing with boost controllers, then yes, you can cause problems... but Stage 1 by itself is one awesome upgrade... the best HP upgrade for the money IMO.

Re: [AUSMPT] Stage 1 on Turbo Lite? Anyone actually done this? Can't Post

Thanks AUSMPT and M.G.
If I get into it at all, it would be just the basics. Probably Stage 1 and possibly the manifold. Would keep it bolt on so I could go back at any time if necessary. Sounds like good bang for the buck and gas prices are really dropping around here so the Premium gas would not even be a big deal.
I have been trying to catch my daughter's Touring N/A and the new car here at the same time to compare the exhaust systems. I would like to keep the stock exhaust if possible.

There are only two engines available for the PT in the USA: the N/A and the Turbo. If the car is a Turbo then it either has the PCM has programming for either the GT HO or the Lite. That is the only difference. Well, OK, the 2003 Turbo only came as the HO version and it had slightly smaller output fuel injectors than later models. So, for the '03 models only the Stage 1 upgrade includes new fuel injectors. Later models just get a new PCM for Stage 1. Whether you have an HO or Lite, the internals are 100% identical. Only the PCM is different, and the HO can can be had with either the 5 speed manual or the Autostick equipped slushbox. The Lite comes ONLY with a basic automatic transmission.

I bought a 2004 Limited Edition Platinum Series Turbo Lite on December 30, 2003 and installed Stage 1 when the car had only 2000 miles on it. That was almost three years ago and I've not had a hint of trouble with it since, even making 50+ passes at the local dragstrip, turning in mid/low 14 second passes. Stage 1 installed on a Turbo Lite PT Cruiser has got to be the single best mod for ANY car on the road today. Jumping from 180HP to 240HP for a few hundred bucks and 15 minutes of work with a 10mm wrench is just astounding!! Do not hesitate to acquire a Lite and Stage 1 that puppy!!!

Thanks Mike. Now that is a direct and to the point answer to my question. Just to be clear, I bought the 04 Platinum Edition with 20k miles yesterday.Just trying to consider options from there.
By the way, what kind of MPG do you get with your current setup? Since you installed Stage 1 so early, do you know what it was before the mod?
Thanks again for the great info.

I usually get 18~19mpg around town, if my foot is in it a lot, but on steady freeway driving (at 80mph and negotiating rather sizeable hills here in SoCal) I'll see 24mpg. Honestly, I don't recall what my mileage was like before S1. As for you considering options - just do it. You can thank me later (and you will want to thank me!).

I will go ahead and thank you now. I felt that this car was too nice to pass up even though it was not a match for GT performance. If I can add the Stage 1 performance boost without dragging the gas mileage down to the 14 mpg that my 318 4WD Dakota gets, I can live without some of the other GT features. 14.48? That is in the ball park where my 70 Challenger RT 383 used to run. I don't have that car any more, but can maybe still have some of the fun.
First things first. I will have to put away some bucks for that dreaded DMV trip. I am running 30 day dealer tags and have not paid the sales tax on the PT yet. Also need to have a chat with the service manager at my dealer and see what their viewpoint is on mods and warranty. I went through a lot to get this car certified and therefore extend the drivetrain warranty to 8/80. The other thing is to put some miles on the car before doing anything to it to be sure that I haven't overlooked any existing problems.
I am glad to know that I do have the option. I found an ad for Stage 1 last night that stated that it could be used on both the Lite and H.O. engines, but it is good to hear from someone who has done it.
By the way, I was unable to open the link to any of your pictures. Would like to see them.
Thanks,

Scott

Oops. Sorry aboiut that Scott.....I don't stop by this forum all that often so my signature was a bit outdated. You should be able to see them now - here's the link It's sort of a chronology of the mods I've done, but I haven't added anything to it in a while. The later pages show the current wheels, which are a near perfect match for the factory paint and very lightweight. Anyway, thanks for the interest.
