Ricart/Columbus was advertising T-Birds at $3,000 off list. The boom sure went off that rose in a hurry. I still think Ford made a big mistake in building a $40,000 retro T-Bird Conv. instead of perhaps a $25,000 one. If DC can put together a well eqipped and high quality PT Cruiser for $20,000 Ford could have done the T-Bird Conv for $25,000. If I was serious into performance 2 seater sports cars I'd pick a Corvette for that kind of money.

I totally agree with you Jake. Plus the design itself is not quite retro enough for me. I can't stand when a car manufacturer tries to make a leap from say a 1966 mustang and compare it to 2003 and mustang and then claim a retro design just because they both have a mustang logo or they bot have three light bars. The only true pure retro design I have seen in a while is the PT Cruiser. Ford made a mistake in not going retro enough to the classic lines, and in over pricing the T Bird. Just my 2 cents and a half!

My wife is an interior desinger so she has great experience in judging fabric, colors, ect.She had her mind set on a aqua colored one' that is until she saw one in the dealership.First off, she stated that the fabrics were of poor quality and didn't match the exterior colors except if you get black. Secondly the Convertable fabric was the wrong color(white), finally there is no factory continental kit.Forget price, my wife said don't waste our time. We walked out in disbelief.

Not really-those were previous autos that were updated. The PT is an original new vehicle and not a copy of an old one. ---------- NOT4SALE

How about the Original Mini Cooper from England, from late 50's, 60's and 70's!

So, that's why they look like a little squatty English car! I've only seen one Mini Cooper in person but I was less than impressed with the style.
I must admit I was very intrigued by the new T-bird though, that is, until I found out how much they cost. Too much for what it is. That kind of money can buy ...

Mr. Bean had a Mini Cooper, it was also on the Benny Hill show. The new Tbird front end looks like the Mad Smile, here. plus, it is an Ugly Retro, as they go. They could have done so much more with that poor car.

If I was looking to buy a companion for my PT, I'd probably get a Mini Cooper. Fuel efficient, small for scooting around town, and not too unreasonably priced. Darn cute, IMHO, too!
I like the appearance of the T-Bird, but agree that the finishing details are less than one would expect in a similarly priced vehicle. Plus, I just can't see paying upwards of $40K for a vehicle. (Of course, by the time I finish adding things to my PT, it's gonna feel like I have about that much in it!) ----------

If you think that was a mistake, wait until you see the Chrysler Crossfire flop. According to my dealer, this thing will be the most expensive Chrysler they offer and it has the same power as a turbo PT! Sounds pretty wimpy for a Mercedes engine. How many people actually buy 2 seaters these days, especially aging baby boomers who might be able to afford it? How many Audi TT's have you seen around? I think there may be one in this city of 300,000 and I'm not even sure it doesn't belong to a dealer.
Just because people get all excited looking at concept cars doesn't mean they'll ever buy one. A vehicle has to have some kind of praticality. That is why the PT is an ongoing success although Chrylser's minivans still outsell it by nearly three times.

Well, your dealer has misinformed you. The crossfire will feature a 3.2L MERC V6 (originally was slated to have 225hp, but will probably enter at 210 with upgrades later). The vehicle is MUCH smaller than it looks in pictures (like a long nosed TT to coin you above), AND will enter around $26,000 and go up to about 35k. The Dodge variant (Razor), which may or may not happen, is slated for an entry level 4cyl version starting in the $16,000s! ----------

I saw a new T-Bird today and looked it over pretty good without knowing this was being discussed here. I'm a fan of the '55-'57 T-Birds and even I had a few good ideas for the new one, as I don't care for the current version at all. I think a fin similar to the '57 should at least be slightly present over the rear tailights. The front looks as described here, and the total look of the T-Bird doesn't take you back to the good-ol-days like the PT.
I also agree that for $40,000, it should have some zip under the hood.
The only good I see was from a review I saw on Hot Rod TV a while back. It said that the designers of the new T-Bird were required to make the trunk wide enough to hold golf bags parallel to the rear bumper.

Regarding the "retro" Ford Thunderbird.... never have really liked the design inside or out. It really doesnt recapture the look that they were after, and the high price has put a lot of folks off to say the least. Im surely not going to pay 40K for a car with a screen wire mesh grille. Zippy or not! Regarding the comments about the Crossfire, I think it will be a winner just because it will be the first American car with a Mercedes drive train. Most folks who buy this kind of car arent really interested in zippin rip roaring performance. Style and quality are more important here I think. And it does have style....better than the Audi TT and more refind than the smallish Mini Cooper. Time will tell. Id like to buy one, but just a tad smallish for my tastes......Have a great day!

I'd have to agree with the comments about the new T-Bird----I'm 50 years old, and my PT is the only non-Ford vehicle I've ever owned. Ford doesn't want to build CARS anymore, just hi-end SUV's and pickups---and FoMoCo won't get any more of my business until they decide to start building CARS again.

I didn't get it then & I don't get it now. Put any T-bird beside any Corvette of the same year & tell me how great the Bird is, Especially '55, '56 & '57. T-Bird has always been just a downsized Ford sedan. The 'new' T-bird looks a bit like an old MGB..no turn on there!

I really don't like the T-bird, either. Hell, I don't like Ford cars in general. The new T-Bird seems to be marketed to attract the eyes of those that like 'retro' styling, yet have the deep pockets of those that buy the Audi TT, etc.
Ford seems to be a company that simply rides the trends. If only the Exploder, Escapee, Diversion and Expenditure were enough for them. I saw the review of the T-Bird on the CarTalk web site. Didn't seem too favorable, really. At least, not as a seriously used car.
I love my PT and plan to keep my butt in the driver's seat for 10 years, at least. It's an affordable, usable car that's dead sexay!

If I had the $..I would buy an original 57 T-bird in that powder blue color w/white top..or maybe a 56 w/continental kit in pink w/white top ...I had a chance to buy a white T-bird in 1988 for $10K...I didn't have the $ then either.. I don't really like the new model much...and agree that if I had $40K I'd buy the original!! My .05 cents worth!! ---------- Cruising since 12/2000 Phoenix, AZ

Ditto on all of the above. If I was going to spend 40,000 on a car I would buy two cruisers. One to show and one for go. No.... both for show and both for go. I just got my Chrome tail lights and put them on. It took about 15 minutes. Wow what a change. I will post new pic.s this weekend on my site. cruisergeo.tripod.com Check it out now for a flashback of this summer and my granddaughters washing the cruiser.
