Tire size Can't Post

My tires are 205/55/16. Can I use something bigger for 16 inch rim, like 205/80 ? I want to raise the car about 1 to 2 inches. Bad roads down here in Costa Rica...

I'm pretty sure it will confuse the computer if you change the tire size. A taller tire will cause your speedometer to show an incorrect speed. Also your ABS and TRAC control might have issues.

Re: [DREAM2ME] Tire size Can't Post

My PT is 2001. I donŽt care about the warranty. I understand that changing 205 to 225 has to do more with the tire width. Since the height is what I want to change, I think I should go from 55 to 60 (205/55/16 to 205/60/16). That should raise the car 1.8 inch???

Can I go to 17 inch rim perhaps?

Is there enough SPACE? Especially for the front wheels.

Re: [ChrisCostaRica] Tire size Can't Post

Since the entire wheel set (wheel+tire) must have the right diameter for the speedometer giving the right speed, it's a very bad idea.

Plus, you can have wheel bearings problems, strut housing dimension problems, suspension problems, stability problems, etc.

You have to know that the profile/aspect ratio (55) value is a % of the treadwidth (205), so bigger is the aspect ratio (within the same treadwidth), bigger is the diameter 'cause bigger is the sidewall height value.

If you're going in the "over-treadwidth" way, you should choose a smaller aspect ratio. You'll have a bigger air volume but the height will remains the same.

That being said, it's commonly known that you should stay within a 3% difference of the original diameter to avoid problems.

The only way to have more comfort (bigger sidewall height) without changing the diameter is to choose a smaller wheel/mag diameter (15" instead of 16") so 195/65/R15 or maybe 205/60/R15

Here's a nice size calculator: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

If you really want to raise the car (really?!), install a lift kit.

Re: [Duster] Tire size Can't Post

WaveHey Chris, this is one of the best explanations of of the tire sizing I have seen. So I guess it comes down to how cushy you want the ride to be or actual ground clearence. Like duster said, if you want ground clearence a lift kit is the answer. If you want cushy, then its a smaller wheel diameter so you can have a taller tire.

Re: [sent1] Tire size Can't Post

Hi Sent1!

Thanks for the compliment. I'm brand new to your forum but I'll be more than happy to help some fellow PTers
if I can.

I do own a PT myself, it's a black 2004 Touring Ed.

I'm going into (light) customization so it's why I joined this forum at first, to grab idea and comments 'bout it.

Re: [Duster] Tire size Can't Post

Other guys have explained it. I think its just the way you said it that made more sense to me. I don't know about Costa Rica but its kinda important around these parts that we know how fast we are goin'. Chris just needed the understanding to make the best choice and I thought you gave it to him.

Anyway, welcome! Whatever you decide to do with your PTC, be patient so you can better find the right thing at the right price. We're here to help.
