To Tint or Not To Tint.

Given that I'm a fanatic about my glass (see post: Avoiding water spots on glass). Is there a window tint out there that can satisfy a glass freak like me? It seems that most of the tint jobs I've seen come with little problems that we have to live with. Bubbles, scratches and pealing seem to be universal to most I've seen. Our mini van had gotten so bad, I finally took it off. I have yet to be able to get all of the adhesive completely off. Are they all made of the same material? Are there any brands that offer an advantage over the others? ---------- CajunCruiser "Tacky.....yet delightfully unrefined!"

I had a VW Jetta when I was living in Florida several years back, and down there a tint is pretty much a must have... Anyway I had it tinted and for the three or so years I had it after that, did not experience any bubbling, fading... I did get it done at a place that offered a lifetime warranty so in case I did have problems I could take it back and have them fix it. I highly recommend that. I don't believe scratches would be covered with any warranty. The tinting material does tear if something sharp comes in contact with it. So if you haul things in your PT, you'd have to be really careful with that. Also there are special instructions you will have to follow (not roll the windows down for several days... even if you are coming to a tollbooth ). I did follow those instructions and as I said did not have any issues... not sure if that might have something to do with how long the tint lasts. Of course no aftermarket tint comes out like a factory tint that is in the glass itself (the clarity of the glass won't be the same). So if your expectations are that high, you probably won't be happy with them. My 2 cents. ---------- 2001 silver Limited-Touring (leather/suede, 4W disk, traction, heated mirrors & all :-) Mods: Tokico HP all around / Energy Suspension Master Kit / K&N drop-in / R1 Concepts drilled & slotte disks all around / Enkei RPF1 16x7 wheels & Conti Extreme Contact rubber / Prestige APS620 remote starter

Thanks for the reply rsobhian, The scratches that I'm most concerned about are with the windows that roll down. Do you see scratches left by the rollers in the window mechanism? Does simply cleaning the windows eventually scratch the material? ---------- CajunCruiser "Tacky.....yet delightfully unrefined!"

Thanks anoldhippy, So you just have the rear window tinted? Did you choose not to have the sides done? If so, why? ---------- CajunCruiser "Tacky.....yet delightfully unrefined!"

Simply cleaning the windows with Windex and the like does not affect a "good" tint (one that someone is willing to warranty). Also these days a lot of manufacturers have gone do a design that has limited what comes in contact with the window during the operation to the rubber seal at top of the door panel. This is true for the PT as well. So no rollers come in contact with the window at all. Based on this design, you should be OK on that front as well. BTW, is your signature quote from Forget Paris? It sounds like a restaurant scene from that movie. ---------- 2001 silver Limited-Touring (leather/suede, 4W disk, traction, heated mirrors & all :-) Mods: Tokico HP all around / Energy Suspension Master Kit / K&N drop-in / R1 Concepts drilled & slotte disks all around / Enkei RPF1 16x7 wheels & Conti Extreme Contact rubber / Prestige APS620 remote starter

I've had after-market tinting on mine for 2 1/2 years with no problems. It was done by a professional tint shop. Max legal tint including both front windows. Only "problem" = backing up after dark. It's Best if I roll down a window first. Cleaning & care instructions = use no glass cleaner that has ammonia. Oklahoma's summers can get pretty hot. The tint drops the interior temperature about 20-25 degrees which really helps the AC cool the car quickly. ---------- Drive Safe & Enjoy the Ride. J. W. Oh no I had the back side windows and the rear window tinted the darkest allowed in Cal. I meant I wish we were allowed to have the front sides and front window to tinted too, to keep the sun out- ---------- Namaste Karen ...when I look in the mirror, I like what I see, just a few more lines looking back at me... My Cruiser has had the front side windows tinted for all most four years now and my wife's Chrysler 300M have been tinted for six years with no problems. I stay away from any cleaner with ammonia in it. My cruiser never goes through a car wash, but my wife's car has a wash job at the car wash weekly. In CA the front side windows are not supposed to be tinted especially with a dark tint but I have never been bothered by the cops. I notice the cars used by the plain clothes cops cars have a heavy tint. One of them lives about a block from my home and you can't even see in his Crown Vic. A side note. I had all the windows of our home tinted when we bought it 19 years ago and never have had any problem with them. I did have to train the cleaning lady not to use any type of ammonia cleaner on them. I furnish the cleaner so I know what she is using. Charlie ----------

I was going to get my front sides tinted cuz your right, the cops hardly ever bug you here/ When I went to the tint shop...my daughter went with me to bring me home. I told the lady go ahead and tint the sides the same color. My daughter said "ah noooo...remember I am a Sheriff and that is a no-no" needless to say, no side tints for me ---------- Namaste Karen ...when I look in the mirror, I like what I see, just a few more lines looking back at me... I guess everyone has there own thought on the tinting. My grand daughters husband is a sheriff in Orange County and both his pick up and her car has there windows tinted. His dad is a L.A. County Sheriff and his and his wifes windows are tinted as well as there daughters car. Go figure. Charlie ----------

I'm glad you asked this question, because I've been considering tinted windows a long time myself. My rear windows came tinted, but not the front. It really aggravates me that they don't match. AL has laws about how dark you can go; maybe that's why the front ones aren't tinted? I talked to a local shop who says they can tint them to match. The rule seems to be that you can't get pulled over just for the tinting, but if you get pulled over for speeding or something else, they can add that to the ticket. Duh—I never considered how much cooler it would be temperature-wise with the tint. I think that needs to be my next mod. ----------

When we bought a used DCS2 in May, it had aftermarket tinted windows. Not sure if it's a legal tint... could be a bit too dark... but it made a huge difference this summer. My wife's Cruiser has the factory tint and driving her car on a sunny day was like sitting in a greenhouse. OTOH, our deep tinted Cruiser felt much cooler to drive in (and "cooler" to look *at* ) on a hot day. Hardly ever needed to run the A/C, either. ----------
