Me 2 here is the official response I got today// Dear Michael : Thank you for contacting the Chrysler Customer Assistance Center regarding your rag-top on your 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser. I'm sorry for the delay in our response to your email. The dealer sent the pictures to our product analysis department, there they will document what they find and use the information they find in possible recalls, defects ect... Until the part breaks/rips/leaks or the dealership feels that it needs to be replaced there is nothing that can be done. Although a more favorable reply could not be provided, we appreciate your sharing your concerns with us. Thank you again for your email. Sincerely, Alex Senior Staff Representative Chrysler Customer Assistance Center ---------- 2005 Touring Edition Convertible Turbo 2.4L LITE Automatic, cool vanilla, faux Street Edition badging, K&N drop in filter, modded airbox, mini-chrome side flames, chrome gas cap cover, customized rear mud flaps, flying siberian husky fur when top dropped.

I'd strongly suggest treating the top. My '06 top is light tan and first time I washed it I noted the almost total lack of water beading. Chrysler dealers offer a convertible top treating product in the MoPar line but no dealers in my area (San Francisco) carry it because of low customer interest. Go to a good hardware store and buy a large (11oz)spray can of Scotchguard Heavy Duty Water Repellent. Can is teal and white and it's made for tents and similar outside heavy uses. Wash your top with a convertible top cleaner available from any of the chain auto retail stores following product instructions. Allow the top to thoroughly dry. Take an old bath towel and masking tape it across the windshield header. Roll down all 4 side windows. In the shade and out of the wind, start in the center of your top and spray 6-8" away from the fabric in long strokes left to right from windshield to the last rear crossbar, doing both sides in a thorough coating. For the rear window panel, take your towel you covered the windshield with and use it as a mask to keep from overspraying onto the body paint as you work around the rear top panel. When getting near the back window, cover the glass with your towel to avoid overspray. Next rain you will note exceptional water beading with this product. Depending upon how often you wash your top, whether you car sits out or is garaged will determine the life of one application. I should think maybe 3-4 times a year in severe cases. If you get any overspray on your paint or glass it doesn't dry so fast that you can't wipe it all off with a towel. I've owned 5 convertibles over the years and keeping the top fabric from absorbing moisture is very important to prolong top life. ----------

Yo Big Jim What a car owners often finds on these chat lists is totally conflicting advice from service mangers. Obviously your advisor is going the opposite direction from mine. So whose advice do we take?....flip a coin! My svs mgr is late 50's early 60's I'd guess. He told me he was a mechanic during those dreadful early 70's when Detroit didn't know how to meet increasingly stringent emissions demands so what they did was to make the worst running engines in history. He's a real "car guy" and his advice on treating a top makes sense to me. My top looks like new and sheds water as if I'd sprayed it with oil. What can I say?? ----------

Top treating is fine, refer to your owners manual, here is a clip from the digital version of my '05 owners manual on treating your top. Apparently, it's up to you, the link Dream 4 provided suggests that according to Haartz it's good a good idea in order to maintain appearance of your top. I personally use a protectant on my top because I live in the Mojave Desert and want to filter UV radiation, I've seen what UV does to unprotected tarps, cloth covers, etc. out here. The price of the protectant that I use isn't unreasonable, so, for my own peace of mind, I apply it about every six months. ---------- 2005 Bright Silver Convertible, 5 speed with 8 ball knob, chrome door spears, chrome gas cap door, chrome antenna bezel, chrome grill kit, chrome rear bumper pillows, chrome bumper trim, stainless antenna with flames, stainless door panel trim, chrome smoothies with baby moons, 2" wide "gangster" white walls, chrome tail light trim, K&N air filter element in a modified airbox and an oogah horn. Chrysler has a product for convertible top treatment in their MoPar line of maintenance products; wax, various cleaners, etc. I tried 7 Chrysler dealers within 50mi of my house and none of their parts department carries the convertible top cleaner and water treatment. They all said they have to order a minimum case (48 bottles I assume) and since they get so few (some said none) customer requests it would take them years to sell a case. Whether a PT convertible owner wants to treat his top for water protection isn't an issue to debate or divide over, it seems to me. A clean top enhances the whole car exterior appearance. A good cleaner should help the fabric retain its resillence and flexibility and thereby resist the problem some owners on this List are complaining about where the fabric is showing esterior wear where the cross bows are placed. Using a product made to retard water absorption will prolong the life of the fabric. While I don't have it in front of me I seem to recall such care is recommended in my '06 owner's manual ----------

As I posted above and again in this post is a clip of page 292 of the 2005 Convertible owners manual, it says to use Scotch Guard type products for your top! For those that did not see it in the other post, open the attachment at the bottom of this post to see what Chrysler tells you in your owners manual: ---------- '05 GT Dream Cruiser Series 4. I had already treated the top but I don't think I did it right. It repelled water for about 1 1/2 rains and that was it. I tried again after ur post inspired me! It should get rained on soon and I'm So excited to find out if I did it right this time. ----------

Hang in there! I discovered that the fabric in my top ('06 tan) doesn't seem to absorb the ScotchGuard product extensively. Maybe if it could be seen under a microscope the repellant tends to lie on the ends of the threads?? I live in an area that averages only 18-20" of rain a year and I keep my car in the garage at all times so I am getting by the whole year quite nicely with just a couple of thorough cleanings and reapplications. The process definitely works and my top continues to look like new ----------

Protect it. I an in Bergen County NJ the Garden State. NJ gets a bad rap due to one area of the Turnpike which has a sulfur smell due to a refinery.
