Turbo Failure??? Can't Post

Last year I purchased a 2003 Dream Cruiser and it had 21,000 miles on it. It was certified Crysler vehicle. Very nice condition. The reason I purchased was I needed a dependable vehicle that did not suck gas bad. Of course I saw the Dream Cruiser and really thought it was cool. Well, 2 problems have occurred. One, a air conditioning hose leaked and made a horrible noise...cost $350. Second problem is happening as I speak. I am just coming off of my vacation and I went to Disney. I had the oil changed and brand new tires put on before I left for Disney. A noise occurred and progressively got louder. It sounded like a squeak of a belt, but it only really happened when I pressed the gas petal. On my return I was doing 80 mph on I4 back home. Upon my return and when I used the car next the noise was very loud, embarrassing, and annoying. I took the car in to the mechanic I use. The result (from him) is he could not find anything wrong and came to the conclusion that a bushing failed in the turbo and that is what I am hearing. The cost (from him) is replace the Turbo which will cost $800 new + labor or $400 reman + labor. Now I am no expert, but I thought the turbo only engages on certain high RPMs. If I was just cruising 80 mph, why would it engage? Anyway, I want to get a second opinion and might take it to a Chrysler Dealer to see what they say. I was just thinking of trading the damn thing in and trying to get a wash of what I owe on it as I am one unhappy PT owner. Anyway, I am on this forum for any insight, suggestions, or if possible some miracle resolution.

Thanks,

Dean

Re: [Delfs] Turbo Failure??? Can't Post

Sorry to hear about the noise. All turbos spin when the engine is on, the exhaust gases spin the turbine. At low speeds and idle there is no appriciable boost, but turbo is still spinning. Yours should still be covered under the 7/70 engine and drivetrain warranty from Chrysler. I am led to believe the factory warranty follows the car, new owners are still covered. Unless someone goofed changing oil or accidentaly ran the engine before putting new oil in it I'd be surprised if a turbo is shot already. But I am by no means an expert, just my 2 cents.
I'd be curious as the the final diagnosis, but I'm guessing it is not turbo. That or I hate to see a troubled tangerine.

I called Chrysler and I am still under the 7/70,000 mile warranty. The woman stated that she could not tell me if I was covered or not, and I was informed to call a dealer. So, I called Dayton Andrews of Clearwater and talked with the service department. The fella there needed the VIN number and stated he would research it and call me back.

Fast Foward.............

Well, he called me back and stated that the turbo is fully covered....if in fact it is the turbo. Appointment is 8:15 Wednesday Morning. I will find out just what is going on with this. To be continued.......

Re: [Delfs] Turbo Failure??? Can't Post

CONCLUSION...Well, Dayton Andrews called back and stated it is not the turbo but the belt pulley system that is causing the squeak. Dayton Andrews charges an $89.00 fee for diagnosis and waives that if you repair it (but somehow I believe it is included in the price :-). Total cost of this repair is $274.00 and some change. Sad that it is hard to find a good mechanic as the original guy charged me about $84 dollars for a diagnosis and stated it was the turbo and that was wrong. He would have pocketed the money and just replaced the pulley system. No matter what you do somewhere down the long road of life a mechanic will be waiting for you to dig in your pockets. What happened to honesty and American pride?

Still confused here. Why is it costing you anything if they just told you the 7/70 is still good on your PT? Pulleys are part of the engine, or most of the ones I have seen!!

Re: [orangecrush] Turbo Failure??? Can't Post

This is interesting....when I called Chrysler they informed me that I did have the 7/70. Now the key word is 7/70 drive train warranty. I asked Chrysler the first time if the turbo was covered and they stated they could not tell me that and I had to call a dealer to find out?????? I think I will call Chrysler back, but I doubt they will have an answer for me. I will have to check.

Re: [Delfs] Turbo Failure??? Can't Post

I am currently on the phone with Chrysler and the women stated that a diagnosis has to be done to figure out which parts are covered as not all parts are covered under the 7/70? The women put me on hold for quite some time and explained that the 7/70 is a drive train LIMITED warranty, but then she stated as she read further that "this does not make any sense?". So, I was placed on hold yet again. She came back and stated that she needed more clarification on this "Tension Pulley System"? She wanted to insure that it was part of the drive train. She is now calling Dayton Andrews to speak with the Service Department which is where my PT Cruiser is currently being repaired. She could not speak with the service person who was handling my account. She then stated that she could/did not see that the Tension Pulley System was covered and stated she would transfer me to further special assistance from Chrysler in help paying for this particular repair. So, I am being transferred…….and then put on hold yet again.

Finally….a man is communicating with me and stated that it is rather odd that at 40,000 miles this would happen.
He further stated that the “Tension Pulley System” was not covered. He stated the 7/70 basically covers the combustible engine and its inner workings. He explained as an example that the tires are not covered but they are a part of what makes the car go (smart ass). He contacted Dayton Andrews to see if the car was in good condition and kept up and to see about helping me out to keep me interested in buying Chryslers in the future.

He came back on the line and stated Dayton Andrews Service Dept. found that the PT was in good working order and everything was working properly. He further that none of the parts of this repair would normally be covered, but he would give a good will adjustment for this. He stated for the Tension Pulley Assembly Chrysler would pay for that as it was unusual for that part to wear out at 40,000 miles. A reimbursement of $90.68 will be given to me if I fax them the invoice/proof of payment to them.

Seems like a lot of grey areas in that 7/70, so don’t think your getting coverage for everything mechanical. It just goes to show you that sometimes you have to push to get anything...even if it is remotely small. Hopes this helps you PT owners out there. Thanks for the tips OrangeCrush.

Re: [Delfs] Turbo Failure??? Can't Post

I also wanted to add that I called back the original mechanic that stated the turbo was making noise. He stated he isolated that and heard noise from the turbo. This guy has like 30+ years repairing cars, so who to believe. As he stated and I thought...."If the turbo is bad your covered due to the 7/70..so who cares". I had to question him due to the $85 dollars diagnosis fee he charged. Since this repair I have heard no noise. I also punched it a bit and still heard no noise. So far so good until the next repair.

Re: [Delfs] Turbo Failure??? Can't Post

Just out of curiousity, as I've had a loud squeaking noise coming from my DC2... was it raining during your trip back from Disney? My pulley system got wet when I went through a large puddle and it squeaked for 3 days until it completely dried out. I'm curious because maybe I should get it checked out and replaced as you did.

There was no rain back from Disney. Keep in mind I had this going on for at least a week and it has been dry as a bone here in Florida.
