Turbo sound Can't Post

 I have a turbo HO.

As I drive on the freeway near the cement divider wall I can hear a whistle. It sounds more like a pea rolling around inside the whistle. Is that what it is suppose to sound like?I have never owned a turbo so I don't know.

Thanks

You probably had a rock stuck in your tread and your passenger is whistling "Dixie". Jump 2

OK, now let me try to get serious.

The PTGT (which I own one) has a broadband turbo and doesn't produce too much of a whine IF one at all. You would hear the whine at higher rpms. I don't know the "pea" sound but it actually could be a rock in the tread or something rattling in the car. You would have to elaborate on that one. If you were driving along a cement divider, then the turbo sound could be reinforced as it was deflecting off the barrier. Since you were driving along the freeway, you were moving at a good speed. If you switched lanes and moved further from the barrier, did the whistling sound dissipate? Please elaborate so I can take a stab at this one further. Next time I'm driving along the freeway I will try to cruise along the a barrier to test this one out. BTW, what gear were you on and how fast were you moving?

Re: [MOB] Turbo sound Can't Post

Well I am doing about 65-70 and I only hear it when I step on the gas. When I release the gas it goes away. BTW I have a auto trans .... Now the pea sound,It is like the sound of a pea rolling around inside a whistle, you know the kind that a Gym teacher had. I though that a turbo is suppose to make a high pitched noise that goes higher with more acceleration. What I hear out of mine is that pea whistle sound with a monotone pitch that does not go higher with acceleration. Joe

Re: [jopie2929] Turbo sound Can't Post

Joe,

That's a tough one to figure out. The whistle sound does not go higher with acceleration. Hmm! Could it be some sort of resonance in the engine or a vacuum leak of sorts? Now the pea rattle sound could be something loose inside the engine compartment or the body of the car.

Have you called the manufacturer? Does the whistle and pea rattle come on only at highway speeds? Not perhaps on hard acceleration? Did this sound come only by the barrier at the freeway? Can you hit 60 on open road without a barrier? Try this again but not on the freeway.

How soon is soon? Too much car for an inexperienced teenage driver. 150 hp PT would be a lot better to get experience.

Have you ever floored the "gas pedal" from a dead stop and not let up till you are going 100MPH. Try it and then remember that your Child can do the same thing, only without all the driving experience you have. Also don't forget friends who want to drive the car. My brother's son lost a beautiful Audi to a friend who want to "try" out the car. Totaled it into a tree first rolling it 3 times. The friend was in the hospital for 1 month. His son now drives a 1985 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel - 0-60 in 1 minute. Fuel is cheap though, he burns french fry oil in it.

Aw c'mon. You have to put some level of trust out there for her. Do this on a "trial" basis. Don't just hand over full ownership until you are sure she is able to handle the PT. The car is every bit a "cruiser" not a killer Camaro, Mustang etc...where you have rear wheel drive tailin things out of wack! I am even sure they have devices now where you can measure and track the speed your kids have been driving. I saw this on a news report somewhere, google it. So think again before totally pullin the reigns on the PT.

I am sure! But really you can use this as a "Learning" experience. Small steps leading to more once all is ok. My kids are only 8 and 6, but both are already arguing over who will be taking the PT vert to college! Again, I will hand it over once they pay me book value and prove that they are responsible enough to drive, own, insure and make repairs and maintenance when needed...have you discussed all those items with her as well? God knows I won't be pavin the way with cash for my kids...no one did it for me, and it is all part of taking responsibility for owning a car.Wink

I agree with this. Never meant for her to not drive it at all. Just not be given the keys and say it's all her's. While a stock PT turbo is not as fast as a Mustang GT it will easily shut down a stock Honda or Toyota. It's also true you can go fast in any car and get yourself in trouble, hurt or even dead. All a parent can do is hope they have laid down the groundwork for being responsible, especially when learning to drive. I'm still all for giving a young teen, learning to drive, a car that isn't more power than they can handle.

Mean green - I mean this in the most respected way. Thanks for the parenting advise. Some back round.I lost my wife 10 years ago and have been raising three kids by myself. My 2 oldest boys are young men (22 and 26)now but when I gave them their first car at 16 it was with the implied threat of a foot in the A$$ if they did not drive like they were taught. I see now that I need to take a different tack with her. Thanks Joe

Not trying to parent, just expressing my views. I may be 55 but I'm into the tuner scene. Having a modified SRT-4 I hang out a lot at the SRTForums. Lots of younguns there and a lot of them are in love with street racing thinking if they are careful nothing will happen to them. A few months ago we lost four members in a matter of three weeks. Two were under twenty and two just over. What a waste. I don't street race, but I won't say that I don't get on my car once in a while on out the country highways were I live. The tuner scene is huge nowadays and some teens like to drive fast and drive hard. It's a lot scarier today to have teenage drivers in the house. Now I'm not lumping your daughter into any of this. I know there are level headed kids out there. You know her best. You have my admiration for being a single parent to three kids. I was a single parent for just one and I can only imagine what it is like to have three.
