Won't Start With Key - Will With Remote Can't Post

My wife's '03 PT Cruiser turbo (don't know if that makes a difference) suddenly will not start when she tries it with the key. We had an aftermarket remote start installed 4 years ago. It starts without any problem when she presses the remote start button. Then she can insert the key, turn it to ON and drive.

This key start problem just began yesterday. It doesn't click like it's trying to start or do anything at all, other than turn on the dash check lights when she tries the key start.

Since it does start with no problem when using the remote I've ruled out a bad starter and bad battery.

Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

Re: [RoadiJeff] Won't Start With Key - Will With Remote Can't Post

Is this one of those after market setups that have one of the keys in a box under the dash?

If it is, I would try using that key to start it. The chip in the key that tells the ignition it is a valid key could have gone bad. (I've never seen that happen before, but anything is possible).

Another question: Was the remote start installed by a shop? If so, most shops will check thier work for free. I know Circuit City will. I used to work in the Roadshop.

My opinion is it has something to do with the remote start.

Good luck, let us know what it is!

...or it could be a bad ignition switch.

It's not too difficult to test it if you're up to it. You'll have to take the cover off the the steering column, and you'll need a test light or a volt meter.

If it was the key it would start run for 2 seconds and then shut down, its probally the ignition switch.

Okay, I just finished removing the steering column shroud and testing the ignition switch with a meter. I was hoping to find a problem but it tested okay. Pin 1 and 7 continuity with key in RUN position; Pin 1 and 6 continuity with key in START position.

Also, I tried the extra ignition key that we never use. It didn't work either, so that rules out a bad chip.

I'll get this thing yet. Thanks for the suggestions thus far.

Re: [RoadiJeff] Won't Start With Key - Will With Remote Can't Post

Update:

I continued tracing the ignition circuit but didn't get too far. When they installed the aftermarket remote start they cut and spliced many wires, added some relays, etc., behind the knee kick panel. I was a bit lost without a wiring diagram for the remote starter.

One relay they added, called a Directed Electronics 610T, has the key position START wire going to it directly from the ignition switch module. I thought about ordering another one (they're only around $12.00, including shipping). I even had the website pulled up to order it. I decided to first put everything back together and see if it would start.

Bingo! It started right up with the key. I guess moving the wires around, unplugging and plugging back in connectors and things fixed it. I suspect it was a stuck Directed Electronics 610T relay but I suppose I'll never know.

Tomorrow I'm stopping by Best Buy, (they're the ones who installed the starter) and ask them if there's a weak link in these systems that they've had problems with, specifically that relay.

Anyway, thanks for reading - I hope I didn't bore anyone too much. :)

Great! Good job! Dance

I was going to ask if your car was a manual and suggest a bad clutch switch if that were the case, but game's over now.

Glad you got it working again. Wave

I would just explain to them what was happening and that it worked after you moved the wires. That means they didn't do something right. They should fix it without charging a fee.

Could you tell if the wires were soldered, taped, or crimped? They should be soldered and taped.

Good luck! Glad you found the problem.Dance
