Would You Travel With These?

My wife and I just bought our first PTC last Saturday. A 2001 Limited with only 24.000. It came with low profile tires with only 7000 miles on them. We will be moving in two weeks from WA - NC. My wife might have to drive her PTC the 3000 across this beautiful countryside of ours. Would you drive with the tires or get a set of "regular" tires?
This is what the tires look like. Your comments are always welcome. Reid:-{ ----------

If the wheels and tires are in good condition then I wouldn't have a problem driving long distance on them... just make sure the spare tire is in good condition just in case.... Does the car ride and drive OK? or is there something that doesn't feel quite right? where in NC are you moving to? ---------- Joel

We took it for a quick drive Sunday night into northern Idaho to go up and over the 4th of July Pass to see how the new girl (man to my wife) would do. The car did fine but it does have a stiff ride. You could feel the bumps more than usual. I did notice today going over the past owners receipts that he did install a Pro Suspension Kit three days before having the tires installed. I'm going to go by the Tire store tonight and find out exactly what the Pro Kit was. I don't know if he might have installed a stiffer suspension. The rims are 18x8 5-100/115 +40 ultra Type 84 Chrome forward. The tires are 225/40ZR-18 Zexius XI-326 All Seasons Blackwall. We are moving to the Winston-Salem area in two weeks. In His Service, Reid

If they're ultra performance "summer" tires, just be careful about driving them in snowy or icy conditions. Not sure if you'll encounter that along your route in a couple of weeks, but keep in mind that most tires made only for warm weather use can be dangerous when the roads get slick. Edit: OK, just read your latest posting. Since the tires are "all seasons", there shouldn't be a problem. ----------

Low profile tires like the ones in your photo are really not designed for long distance travel. They were originally designed for road handling and high speed turns, rather than a highway tire designed for long distance traveling. Most folks who mount these type of tires on their vehicles are either used for shows or local driving with low mileage trips. Because of the low sidewall, these tires usually ride much stiffer than normal sidewall tires because there is less cushion for ride stability. These tires usually do well in wet weather because the tread design holds more of the road surface than a normal designed factory passenger tire. You normally see this type of tire on high performance low riding vehicles with suspension designed for that specific tire. High speed is the idea here, not comfort. Hope that helped. ---------- "Just Cruisin' Lite."

Hi there, If the tires only have 7,000 miles on them, then they should still be new and ready for the road. However, as with any custom wheels, especially the low profile type, it is imperative that you do not hit any moderate to large bumps or potholes. There is not enough cushion between the rim and tire to absorb any large bumps, so the rim takes the full hit. Good Luck and Nice Looking PT ----------

Because those are 18" rims you will have to stay with a 40 series (smaller sidewall) if you want the speedometer to work correctly. You are somewhat stuck with a smaller sidewall. The Pro Kit sounds like Eibach lowering springs and if true then the front is lowered 1.6" and the rear 2". ---------- 2005 Stone White SRT4 2004 Graphite Auto

If I remember right those tires are from Les Schwab. You should have a Les Schwab Tire store near you. I would stop by a talk to them. ---------- Richard Westcott Idaho/Montana Director Meridian, ID Red, 2006 GT Mods: Fuzzy Dice. Presto Change-o third brake light mask. More to come.

You are correct in that the tires came form Les Schwab. I stopped by there tonight after work and they told me that the suspension was lowered but they didn't tell me how far. I'm going to take the car back by and see if there are any tires I can buy with it lowered of if I will have to stay with the current tires. Thanks for all of the comments. Reid

There are people out there that will kill for tires and wheels like what you have. If you want a smooth comfortable ride, I would look for some 15" wheels and 205x65x15 tires. You should easily be able to sell the tires and wheels you have on the car for more than what it will cost for the 15" wheels and tires. I got some 80K mile warranty 15" tires and nice wheels for under $600 from Discount Tire on the Internet. The tires were mounted and balanced, all I had to do was put them on. ----------

My PT 2006 came new with the low profile tires. I commute about 100 miles per day on interstate. The right front blew out after only a few weeks. (lots of fun driving on the spare to get home). I put on some nice chrome rims with the best 15" Michelins I could buy. Much nicer ride and the gas mileage went from 24mpg to 27/28 mpg. The tire guy gave me a nice trade in allowance on my old rims. ----------

I have 18's on Cruiserspt.. It's an 06 Convertible. .I think the ride is great. You may want to check your tire pressure. I keep mine at 40#'s. ---------- big jim

Just depends on what you want. The 18's will cause a stiffer ride, but the handling will be more precise. As with anything else there are trade offs. Softer ride will not make it handle, but to each his or her own. I have been on 18's for 20,000 miles ---------- 2ndsrt
