door panel Can't Post

so some cowardly asshat last night broke into my '03 pt and stole my laptop. whoever did it used a crowbar, jammed it in the vertical door frame on the front passengerside window, and pushed. the glass has been fixed, but now there's a healthy hump in that piece of metal. that infuriation aside, here's my question.

glass repair guy said its not worth claiming, that ordering the part from the dealership, removing a screw on the inside of the door right above the lock, and sliding that exterior panel off and a new one on will fix it, very easy, very do-it-yourself. thoughts? anyone done this before?

also the door panels on the rear doors, where some one puts their hands, are all shiny and blemished from hands. is it worth buying some polish (i don't otherwise have any) or should these be replaced too?

I think you are referrring to the outer door skin. Replacing the outer door skin is not a do-it-yourself job. Too bad you replaced the glass. A used door could be easier and less costly, especially if you found one the same color.

I assume you're joking. An entire door can be bought and installed for less than $156 + tax?

As for "door skins", can they be purchased individually?

Outside door skins can be ordered per door, but its not a DIY job. I've had my passenger door done a couple of times(one my fault other not my fault) but you would still have to have it painted to match. Bodyshop job.

The inside panels are cleanable a lot of that shine is just dirt and yuck from years of use. Mequairs #39 Vinyl and Rubber cleaner will take years off those panels. I used it after I quit smoking on my light taupe interior worked wonders. You will probably have to order it on-line but its worth it. It will even clean years of fade off the grey bumpers if you have them or off cladding on your other cars. Once you srub them down once or twice with a terry towel and see what you really have then you can decide if you want to buy new or just apply a interior protectant.

And I would look at salvage yards before I called a dealer parts department. Sometimes you get lucky in a salvage yard. I took almost an entire 01-02 interior for a project car for about a $150 bucks. They were cool and let me pull all the pillars I needed, some will some won't.

CoolHello.I know how troubling it is because my PT was broken into also.A much simpler plan would be to get a whole door from a junkyard and pop it on.If you are really lucky and find one the same color all the better but if not just have it painted to match. The cost will be less and alot less trouble that attempting amateur auto body repairs........God Bless........Mike
