dumb question: how do I open the top

Hi,
I am not a PT owner :(. I rent one yesterday, but for some reason, I couldn't open the top cover.
I tried to press the button (with two small PT icons on it) at the middle of the bottom of control panel, I heard the top seems like trying to move, but couldn't. Is there anything else I need to do or maybe it's broken? any hints?

There is a big "D" ring handle that you have to pul down and turn. It releases the top then push the switch. Reverse to close.

Be careful, renting a convertible PT can be dangerous (to your wallet). My first experience with a PT Cruiser was renting a convertible. I loved it so much I had to go out and buy one!
Here's another hint: the convertible top button has two settings. Push it lightly to the first stop and the top goes down but the windows stay up. :)

Really? I didn;t know a light first touch and 2nd full touch will leave the windows up while the top goes all the way down...gotta try that after work...also figured out the car has to be in park in order for the top to go up or down. I think the Sebring allows for a 5mph up and down operation whilst the PT doesn't....

It is a 2 detent switch, first detent top down / windows stay up, second detent top & windows go down, (as stated in the owners manual), also you may want to check your top down in gear again, On my DC4, I put the top down at a stop lights all of the time while still in drive.
What i would like to know is if the '06 window switch will work in the '05, as the '06 has an extra "All Up" button.

I tried the 2 step thing, not working for me. I hit it 1x and the top starts to go down and the windows go down bit. I wait and hit switch full the 2nd time and all goes down.
I'll also retry putting the top down whilst in gear, am sure it wouldn't work and thought the owners manual stated this...
I'll forgo any added switch on the 06 as that 06 dash is not apealing to me at all.

After reading your post I went out to the PT and verified what I had said before, the top will go down in any gear, forward or reverse, and again the 2 position switch, holding the switch in the first detent the windows drop approx. 1 inch to clear the top, and the the top will go down, and the windows stay up,(the small drop is to provide clearance in case you put the top back up with out lowering the windows so you don't jamb the glass & weather seals), and all down at once if you bypass the first and go right to the second detent,
also the manual stats that this will work in gear up to 10 MPH.
So unless they made a change mid year yours should also work the same way

Keep the button at the first detent, don't push it all the way down.

I don't have to have it in park to get the top up or down. I know because I routinely put the top up or down at stop lights for no other reason then to show off. I just leave it in drive and apply the brake. I've also had to put the top up quickly when the rain starts. Ours is a purple 05 LO TE we got in June of '04. The only reason I of think of for having the windows up is because the temperature is below 60.
