electrical problem Can't Post

I have a 2003 Turbo GT standard stick 5 speed. I had to replace the battery last October. The PT has 41,000 miles on it.

After the battery replacement I noticed that my dash lights flicker sometimes when I have the tach over 2200. I do not drive much in the dark but my husband drove it the other night and said my head lights also flicker. Not sure it has anything to do with the battery change.

It seems like it only happens when the tach is over 2000.

I have taken it to my mechanic and he said that the voltage fluctuates. He thought it was the alternator. He suggested I take it to the dealership. I took it to the dealership and they had it for two days and said they could not find anything wrong. Of course they did not drive it after dark so I am not sure they saw what was happening. I also took it to a parts store and they checked my alternator and did not see anything wrong. They said that they doubted it was the alternator on that low of mileage. They suggested I get on the computer and ask you guys.

I am very frustrated. I love my PT but ready to trade just because we can not find out what it wrong. Frown

Anyone hear of this problem?

I would appreciate hearing any ideas!

My '03 GT 5 speed did the same thing until i installed a hyperground system. You can make your own (I did) or buy a system.

There are many more. Just do a search.

The lights flickering is a problem that most 03 turbos have. My headlights, dash light, radio, dome light, all lights on my 03 GT flicker. I have taken it into the dealer time after time. They don't know why or what is causing it. New battery, battery cables didn't fix it. Still today after 60,000 mile it still flickers. You say that your's is over 2000 rpms. My does it from idle to cruising speed. If you find out what is causing the lights to flicker post your findings because I know others that would like to get this problem fixed. Good luck Jerry

Well on March 1 my son is going to put a better ground on it and I will let you know if that fixes it or not. He is making one and not purchasing the kit.

My PT did not start it until after I changed the battery or at least my husband and I did not notice it before and I have had it since it was brand new.

I did a ground system thing. Where you ground everything and it didn't help ether.

YAY! I'm not the only person with a GT that does that! I thought the guys at Circuit City (let the flaming begin) screwed something when they put the Remote start in!

It is a grounding problem, I had the same thing. I recommend loosening and retightening all ground connections especially the big one under the driver side fender next to the battery and the one that grounds the engine to the frame on the passenger side. Got rid of all the flickering except when I stepped on the brake. Since then I also did the hyper grounding by adding a 8 gauge grounding cable from the battery to the ground taps previously mentioned. It did wonders the engine even starts better now.

I will let you all know after Saturday because my son is going to work on it then.

I am so glad to find that it is a problem with more than mine and I do not have to trade it!

Re: [chardare] electrical problem Can't Post

Not too long ago, cars had a simple device called "voltage regulator" whose job it was to... well... regulate the voltage in the electrical system of the car. When the voltage regulator worked, lights did not flicker, fans worked at whatever speed they were supposed to work... and when the lights started to flicker you knew what to change... and life was simple and good...

So when this thread started to take off I was surprised that there was no mention of the said regulator, and that made me start to think how DOES the PT regulate its voltage?!

Time to take out the trusty manuals and hit the books... Wink

Come to find out, the old-fashioned voltage regulators are much too simplistic to be worthy of serving the computer-age automobiles and so... enter the Electronic Voltage Regulator (EVR) circuit built right into the PCM, which monitors the system line voltage, the temperature of the battery, determines just the right target voltage, and cycles the ground to control the strength of the alternator rotor's magnetic field... and just to be absolutely certain that no fast tricks are pulled, it does so 100 times per second... Roll eyes

Rumor has it that the engineers are hard at work on the design of the next gen PCMs that will also factor in the alignment of the moon and the Sun, and the magnetic field of the Earth to ensure the absolute proper voltage on whatever square foot of the planet the car might be running...ROFL

In any case, having learned how over-complicated the business of regulating the voltage has gotten, I'm beginning to see why most of the time the system may not function as intended, and how in some instances grounding may fix the problem (depending on where the problem is) and in other instances it may not.
