Was it hard to change the plugs and wires? I look down into my engine compartment and I can't even SEE the plugs. Please tell me they're hidden somewhere at the front of the engine under the intake manifold, not in the rear ---------- 2007 Limited, Auto, 2.4L NA

My 2001 LE is giving me around 21 mpg combined Interstate and city driving. Probably about 40% Interstate with the rest on city streets. So far I haven't taken a long trip with it with all highway driving, maybe this summer. ---------- New owner 2001 Limited Edition. Shale Green Metallic. In reality, it is a much easier job than it first looks to remove the upper intake manifold and get to the plugs. Actually changing the plugs and wires only takes a few minutes, and removing and replacing the manifold adds maybe about another 30 minutes total, maybe a bit longer if it is your first time changing the plugs. Just have some clean rags handy to plug the openings to the lower intake manifold in case you drop something. ----------

It took about a half hour on my 06. But that was the first time I've ever done it on a PTC. There are five 8mm bolts on the front of the intake you have to take off. After they are off, pull up on the intake. To hold it up and out of the way, I stretched a bungie cord from the intake to the hood latch. From there it's like changing the plugs and wires on any car. They are in the dead center of the engine, directly under the intake. Make sure to use antiseize and dielectric(sp) grease. You'll thank yourself when you go to change them later. I'm willing to bet that when you pull out the old plugs, the're going to be horribly misgapped. Mine were. It looks harder than it is. Anyone familiar with changing parts on a car should make light work of it. Hope that helps! -Ray ----------

So you just unbolt the upper intake and lift it out of the way? That sounds less daunting than these instructions: http://www.ptcruizer.com/pt-cruiser/spark-plugs.html By the way, I'm taking a different route to work now and I managed 22.5MPG on my last tankful. If only I could squeeze out an extra 3MPG or so, I'd be satisfied. I figured that with a typical amount of driving, I could go a whole week between fillups if I were getting 25MPG

Either way works fine. I've done both and find it easier to disconnect everything (it is easy). However, I didn't think about the bungee cord idea! I may have to rethink it now. Doug ----------

Be sure to tell them the mileage you're getting when you go in for your 30,000 mile service. Since your car is still under warranty, if there's something else wrong, now is the time to find it. ----------

The mileage on my '01 Touring has stayed pretty constant at around 24.5mpg on a yearly average. This time of year I can get about 26mpg and it can drop to a low of around 22mpg when I use the AC. It has the Bosch +4 plugs, after market wires and the K&N drop in filter. I'm happy with it. ----------

I have an 06 NA auto. with no mods. I have been getting 24 on the Highway and as low as 19 in city driving. I was expected better than that. I want to get the K and N cold air intake but it's not legal in California! California is rather draconian with thier smog laws among other things. Overall I am really happy with the PT but I kind of wish I had gotten a turbo instead of the NA. ----------

I had added a cone airfilter to my PT before I went to the Alabama Picnic last year and the best mileage I got was 24mpg. Before I went to the event this year I added a 2" diameter flex hose next to the driver's side foglight after taking out the factory deflector and ran it under the battery to the airfilter. I was doing as well as 27mpg driving at the same speeds (75 to 80), on the same stretch of road as last year. ---------- If it's gonna happen - it's gonna happen out there.

The master mechanic up the street from me changed everything for me yesterday. He only charged me $40.00 . Nice Guy. I'm going to drive around locally until Next Friday then I will fill it up and take a trip south. Down 95 Through Baltimore and DC to Fredricksburg Va and back. If this thing doesn't get better Mileage it's Gone.I rented an Impala last year with a 3.5 that will blow the socks off of this PT and will get better mileage too. ---------- big jim

I have 16" tires all around and used 87 gas the entire trip. I don't know how much was ethanol blend gas or not. Here in Florida, most gas is now ethanol blend (10%) and cars are losing 1 - 2 MPG compared to normal gas. The only change I made to the car is the K&N air filter. I use Bosch2 plugs and motorcraft wires. ----------

Well ,I'm back, We went 194 miles on Friday .Most of it was in a light rain, speeds were down to 65 mph. Got to the VA state line and we hit a huge parking lot ,35 miles of it. It took us over an hour just to go 35 miles. and no accidents. We filled the convertible and it only took 7.0 gallons I couldn't belive it. That's 27.7 MPG. I wonder what it would have been under normal conditions. We drove Around Fredricksburg locally Saturday and Some on Sunday. It rained during the graduation, at the college, then it got clear and by 3pm we had the top down. WE left to come home around 9 am and we pulled into the drive way around 11:50 am. Tomorrow I'll fill the cruiser up and see how we made out .We did about 40 miles local. on Saturday. ---------- big jim

Recently we took about a 60 mile trip up to Mass. for an early Mother's Day get together, and as we ended up running a bit late I hit the gas harder than usual - 70 to 75 MPH instead of my usual 65. My usual 29 MPG slowly declined to about 25 and change. My "Walter P" 5-speed 2008 'vert has a bit over 4000 miles so I don't consider the engine broken in, probably he will do better after another few thousand miles, at this speed. But for now, if I want to get in the high 20s I'll plan on a bit more driving time to keep the speed down. UPDATE June 20 - Just returned from a round trip to Mt Desert Island Maine and surprised myself with a high of 32.2 MPG, reached on the return leg. Highway driving mostly, 50-65 mph depending on traffic. Hit 7000 miles, and I'm going to shoot for 33 mpg on my next Maine trip, hopefully in late August.

We went a total of 363.2 miles. On Sunday we drove 184.6 miles and we did it in 2 hrs and 50 minutes. I filled the cruier up this morning and it took 8.3 gallons. The only problem I'm having is figuring the true distance traveled. With the 18 inch tires ,I traveled 17 less turns per mile which comes out to 5,174.4 total less turns So can anyone come up with the true mileage. It looks like 25 miles per gallon for the trip. At $3.65 a gallon. ---------- big jim
