raccoon damage

Hi all, I was driving my girlfriends cruiser on a road trip and hit a raccoon going about 65mph. I pulled over immediately and towed it home the next day. At a quick glance under the car, the lower part of the front bumper is smashed in which caused damage to the radiator. It also looks like there is a transmission cooler in front of the radiator? Did these cars have a separate tranny cooler? I'm doing the work myself since her insurance dropped her the second they heard about this incident (stay away from allstate). The damage doesn't look that extensive, i have a radiator on order ($90). I still need to look closer at the damage i just haven't had time. My question is, what else should i expect to need to replace? Thanks in advance. ----------

Is the car a turbo? If so, that is where the intercooler is mounted. ---------- I'm at that awkward age. I ask for the senior discount at restaurants, but my PT still has Stage 1 and dual 10" subwoofers.

Non-turbo automatic. Based on size and location i'd guess it to be some type of oil cooler. Like a tranny cooler. I doubt the a/c condenser on these cars is that short top to bottom. Hopefully that isn't damaged $$$. ----------

I should have looked at the service manual first. The intercooler (on cars with turbo) is mounted down low. The transmission oil cooler is shorter and mounted about midway up the radiator. Is this what you are talking about? If you do find it necessary to remove the trans cooler, the service manual (for my 2004) states that the hoses to the cooler must be replaced if disconnected because there is no way to remove them without damage and this will create a leak. ---------- I'm at that awkward age. Thanks for the info. I can't seem to find a transmission cooler for this car on parts sites. I read that these cars have power steering coolers as well. Whatever it is is mounted pretty low. I'll take pics tonight if i get a chance. ----------

I believe you are talking about half of the transmission fluid cooling system. The ATF cooling system is a two-step oil/air system. The automatic transmission fluid goes exchanges heat with oil in the lower part of the radiator. The oil then goes through the little radiator you are talking about and gets cooled by air. This system is a separate and I believe sealed system so the oil is not the same oil as in the engine, nor does this system mix with the coolant in the upper section of the radiator. I did a quick search on the web and like you came up with nothing. Hopefully this is not a dealer-only item, but it might be. ---------- 2001 silver Limited-Touring (leather/suede, 4W disk, traction, heated mirrors & all :-) Mods: Tokico HP all around / Energy Suspension Master Kit / K&N drop-in / R1 Concepts drilled & slotte disks all around / Enkei RPF1 16x7 wheels & Conti Extreme Contact rubber / Prestige APS620 remote starter

Hi, Rsobhian, You always make me smile as you are so smart. AnYway I have a story, of course. When I went to the Chrysler dealer, here in small town Nebraska, the manager takes me in the mechanics bay to show me a yellow PT that had a mouse die in the airconditioning unit. You should have seen the inside of that car, all chewed up. So, how did that happen, Rsobhian. Mice are the darnedest little creatures... they only need the tiniest little hole to get through. The easiest way it could have gotten in, however, was a window or a door that was left open. Once inside, mice being mice and all, it's only natural for it to crawl in the A/C vents. This reminds me of when I was a kid and my uncle had this peugeot 504 (now there is car that belongs in a museum with the 4spd on the steering column and all ). So you guessed it, a mouse had died in the heater vents/box somewhere. Of course my uncle found out about it several days later from the rotten mouse smell. I have this vivid recollection of us driving in a middle of the snow storm and the smell was so bad we had rolled down all the windows and people were looking at us like we were crazy. ---------- 2001 silver Limited-Touring (leather/suede, 4W disk, traction, heated mirrors & all :-) Mods: Tokico HP all around / Energy Suspension Master Kit / K&N drop-in / R1 Concepts drilled & slotte disks all around / Enkei RPF1 16x7 wheels & Conti Extreme Contact rubber / Prestige APS620 remote starter

That PT owner with the mouse in the A/C probably looked on the forums and thought it was normal. "Musty smell" when using the A/C. I hear that's a problem with the pre 06's. -Ray ----------

HEY RAY, My dad had a car like that, smelled terrible of must. I think there was a thread on that about cleaning the drain hose. The mouse owner, did not understand why they waited so long as the mouse had chewed his way out, it looked like or in. There was chewed up bits all over that car. Hi, I feel your pain about hitting the raccoon. I hate raccoons sooooo much because one killed one of my peahens. It was caught and finally killed with a bat to the head. I did not feel sorry for it either. I still hate raccoons. Due to experience I can tell you that from the bumper on down is one solid and expensive piece to replace.
I too had a bad day today, I had a run in with a big pot hole and a speed bump. I am glad all that happened was that my stainless steel air dam was bent a little. I managed to bend it back a little, but nothing catastrophic. (knock on wood) Good Luck with your dilemma. ----------

Hitting an animal or bird is a comprehensive loss under an auto insurance policy. Never clean off the remains until the insurance company sees the car. Proof of fur would help if you ever hit a deer or any other animal. This is not a chargeable accident and should not be held against the insured. You said the insurance company dropped your girlfriend. Did they drop the policy because of the accident, or because you were driving the car? ----------
