radiator and transmission Can't Post

I have a 01 Limited Edition Automatic PT. I recently had to get the transmission rebuilt ($1800). I then went in for an oil change and 13 points check and was advised that the radiator is leaking. I took it back to the transmission specialist and was told that it's not a leak. That the plastic and metal parts of the radiator or coming apart due to the types of material and the age. Is this accurate information? How much does a reparir like this cost? They said to add radiator fluid every couple days until I repair. They said should be ok for a few months. My PT has 73000 miles. What other problems am I to look forward to. I plan to keep this car forever. What do I need to do to keep it from sending me into bancruptcy?

Oh I bought it new. I am the only owner. Any advise/suggetions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [pt mable] radiator and transmission Can't Post

I know they don't make 'em like they used to but still it should be coming apart. Seems odd...

Anyway, problems may arise with a cooling system if it is not properly taken care of. The coolant should be drained and the system flushed about every 5 years (depending on the product used). Coolant has an experation. When it reaches the end of its lifespan it can actually begin to eat away at the metals rather than protect it. This may not have anything to do with the problem you are having but thought I'd mention it in case you haven't flushed the system yet.

If there is someone you can trust that can look at the car--do that. Its always good to get an outside honest opinion from someone that doesn't want your money. Depending on how bad the leak is you may be able to use a radiator stop leak. This really is just a temporary fix but I've seen it last quite awile.
