We just got back from Florida today while there we rented a 06 PT convertible. From National Car rental .It was $239.00 for 12 days with unloimited mileage. So we drove it a little over 1000 miles. It was a Turbo. they told uas to burn 87 octane. and to run the tank drive before we returned it so we did. Now the car was a touring edition. with 16 in tires and an automatic. I always thought that you had to use Hitest. It got awful mileag on 87 oct but it ran great on 89 octane. ---------- big jim

It was probably the Touring Edition Turbo "lite" like mine... yes, you burn regular (87 octane) in it. You only have to use the premium in the GT (high output turbo). I average 25 to 30 mpg with mine (if I can keep my foot out of it) but some days I just have to play and the mileage drops down to 19 mpg So other than the lousey gas mileage how'd you like it? I really didn't care for the color,it was a dark gray ,our's is marine blue. But other then the turbo I could see a difference. the cruise didn't work and I didn't like the color. some sort of dark gray. The ride was good. There were a lot of 06 Pt convertiblesAt our hotel on Saturday .I saw six in our parking lot. Only one was the medium blue the rest were dark gray. All had Florida tags. ---------- big jim

As a point of reference, I am averageing around 19 mpg w/ my GT Turbo (hi-output) and on a recent trip which included some stop and go I averaged a little over 23. I have the 5-speed. In my opinion, considering the power this vehicle has and other factors, the mpg is very good. ----------

Both of our Cruiser's use 87 octane and that's a big saving over a long haul and the 01 gets 20 local and between 26 and 29 on a trip. with an automatic. The 06 Gets 20 to 22 local and I don't know what it get's on a trip. I haven't tried that yet. ---------- big jim

Premium costs only $2 to $3 more per fill up so that's the price I'll pay for full power and performance! ----------

When you retire as I have you'll see that every two to three dollars per week or so adds up to about $150.00 extra per year. It doesn't sound like much until you need it. As for power and performance ,If that's what you need ,go for it. I'll just poke along and get there when I get there..I have all the power and performance that I need. Of course if I were to really need all that power I'll just take my Dodge Ram 1500 ThunderRoad 4x4 Quad Cab for a spin. Boy will this baby fly. ---------- big jim

I don't plan on retiring, just working until I drop. Now I see why you buy regular for your PT; that truck sucks all your gas money down!! Anyway, have a nice day. ----------

Personally, I have my eye on the '08 or '09 Challenger as my PT replacement in 3 years. Not that I'm not enjoying the PT, I am. But, the lure of Hemi power may be too much to resist. Then again, if gas is $5 / gallon by then..... ----------

Our first Hemi was a 66 Dodge Charger with the 426 Hemi. Gas cost .39c per gallon for high test then and it got around 5 miles per gallon. The car had a 29 gallon tank.I couldn't afford to buy gas then either .We traded it in for a 68 Plymonth two door coupe with a 273 V8. The color was bright Yellow. The new Hemi's have the power but they all suck Gas. try Dodgeforum.com before you buy one ,check out all the problems people are having. There is some really good information on that forum. Our Hemi isn't that bad for gas mileage when you consider that I traded in a 95 Ford Bronco with the 5.0 engine. it ran good but the gas mileage was worse then the Hemi. The Hemi gets around 9.9 local in the winter.and around 14 local in the summer. Trips around 17.0 Pulling my boat 13.5. It'll pass anything on the Highway except a Gas station. ---------- big jim

Well, since it'll be 3, maybe 4 years before I get anything w/ a Hemi, they should hopefully have the bugs worked out by then! ----------

Jim: reading this post of yours was a hoot! I hear ya about cheap gas way back when, but STILL not being able to afford it..my future br-in-law had a Satellite Hemi he literally had to park it most of the time because of gas.....of course, what we're not telling folks is: back when "hi-test" was .39 a gallon, some of us were earning less than 50 cents an hour (at my first job, I earned about 45 cents/hr) and, for example, my father at AO Smith Corp was making, likely, about $2.83/hr. In '67, I actually made good money working in the deli of a unionized Sentry grocery store: $1.83/hr...that was considered magnificently good pay for a teenie bopper back then (had to pay for that embarrassing pale pink mustang, don'tcha know) . ---------- Melissa in Wisconsin: MOONBOP, the 2006 Electric Blue PT Turbo Touring Convertible 16" chrome rims, grill, etc. Mods stacking up for Spring '07 application

My first real job was at Chrysler in Newark Delaware in the summer of 1960. That's a long time ago. I was 18 years old. Can't remember how much we got paid but in those days it was pretty good. gas was 19 c a gallon and smokes were 20 c a pack and you got two pennies on the side for change. That's when I went out and go me my first new car .It was a !960 Chevy Impala two dr. coupe HT with a 396 V8 ,automatic. It was all white with a red interior. Boy did it fly. My boss was so made at me for buying a Chevy and working at a Chrysler plant. One night he challenged me to a race up the road. We were on a one lane each way road. He tried to pass me at 110 mph ,we got side by side and that was all it took. A flock of white geese walked across the road in front of us and we hit them at full speed. They didn't do any damage to our cars but we had blood and feathers on our cars for a week. Every one got a big kick out of that race. That's when McDonolds hambergers were 15c each and fries were a dime. .When I was dating back in those days a real steak on a bun, fries ,and a coke were $1.75. ---------- big jim

Great story! You mean you guys had Mickey D's back then? The Milwaukee area didn't....I sampled a Mickey D's circa 1962 or 1963 from a small white with red arches block building when visiting relatives in Chicago. Just the age difference between us can be logged in price changes--LOL! Had my first Old Gold out of a machine at, I think it was: 25 or 35 cents a pack--this would be about 5 yrs after you got your car. Boy oh boy, you musta been feeling like you were "s***ing in tall cotton" with that 396 Impala, eh? (Great colors for that year) I remember stealing my older brother's 391 (if I remember correctly on the size here) white ragtop, 3 on-the-column Ford Sunliner out of the garage--that's how I taught myself how to drive when I was 14....and my Dad never said a word for about 20 years....then, one day...out of the blue, in Wisconsin "farmer German" he says: "by da way...I knew what you was doin'....ya left alley gravel tracks trying to back your brudder's car back in before I got home". Like you, I got challenged from some guy...out in the country we went (with folks on each end as monitors).......can't remember what the kid had, but eventually, he backed down from me before we hit the end. It was a GREAT feeling to be a girl in 1964-1965 and hold my own that night--foolish and dangerous as it was--believe me, I'm very glad to be here after all of the car foolishness and motorcycle foolishness. When I ripped the tranny out of my mother's 1962 Ford, that was it...never allowed to drive the family cars again...it was so traumatic for me that I can't remember what stunt I was pulling down at the lakefront meeting place (sheepish grin) when I dropped it. Gees, can't imagine whacking a flock of geese----hit one of those dang Nebraska pheasants back in '88 with my Eddie B Bronco II, going about 85 mph and thought someone was shooting at me out on I-80, especially when blood was splattered all over. LOL! ---------- Melissa in Wisconsin: MOONBOP, the 2006 Electric Blue PT Turbo Touring Convertible 16" chrome rims, grill, etc. Mods stacking up for Spring '07 application
